Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team returns from the holiday break this weekend traveling to Sacramento, Sunday for a 2:05 pm tip against Sacramento State.
The Highlanders split a pair of home games last weekend picking up a last-second victory over UIC on Friday, December 20, before dropping a 71-64 decision to Northern Illinois on Sunday, December 22.
Nick Gruninger and Chris Harriel both recorded season-scoring highs with 18 points each in the loss to the Huskies. Taylor Johns (13.9) and Chris Patton (12.9) continue to lead UC Riverside in scoring, while Johns' 8.3 rebounds per game are tied for third in the conference.
Sacramento State is 3-5 on the season with three of those results coming against Big West opponents: A 73-67 win at UC Davis, and losses to UC Irvine, 79-53, and at Cal State Fullerton, 59-51.
Mikh McKinney (14.9) and Dylan Garrity (12.0) pace the Hornets' offense thanks in part to 34.2 and 46.8 percent shooting from long distance, respectively. Defensively, Sacramento State allow the opposition to make 45.1 percent of its shots and 37.3 percent from beyond the arc.
The Highlanders are 12-4 all-time against the Hornets with wins in 11 of the last 14 meetings. Since making the move to Division I in 2001, UCR is 4-1 vs. Sac State. The last time these clubs met was on November 28, 2009. The Highlanders won that meeting, 59-58, thanks to Larry Gurganious's putback at the buzzer.
