Highlanders Fall To Kansas State In Consolation Game Of Surf & Slam Tournament

San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (4-9) fell to Kansas State (6-5) in the consolation game of the Surf & Slam Tournament on Monday afternoon, 74-42, at Viejas Arena (box score).
Annelise Ito scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line to lead the Highlanders offense, while Natasha Hadley added 10 points. Leticia Romero had 16 points for the Wildcats.
Kansas State jumped out of the gate in the first period hitting 4-of-6 from the field including three straight three-pointers to take an 11-0 lead. The Highlanders committed three turnovers while failing to hit a shot during first four and a half minutes of action.
Hadley's jumper in the paint at the 15:08 mark put UCR on board, but the Wildcats scored the next five as the lead ballooned to 16-2. K-State cruised through the rest of the first half as the lead reached as high as 22 points. The Wildcats were on fire from three-point range, hitting 8-of-13 from downtown for a 61.5 percent clip.
Kansas State scored the first two buckets of the second period, but UC Riverside rallied for the next six points cutting the margin to 47-27 with 14:12 to go. The Wildcats countered with eight unanswered points, and 14 of the next 16 to push their margin above 30 four minutes later.
The teams played each other even the rest of the way with K-State earning the 74-42 victory.
For the second straight game, UCR was without its leading scorer, Brittany Crain, due to injury.
The Wildcats hot three-point shooting cooled off a little in the second half, as they finished out the game hitting 52.4 percent. From the field overall, K-State outshot the Highlanders, 48.0 percent to 28.6 percent.
UC Riverside will look to snap its six-game losing streak with the start of Big West Conference play, scheduled for Thursday, January 9 against Cal State Fullerton at 7 pm PT in Riverside, CA.
