Palm Springs, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored two runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings Monday morning, but a Joey Matthews RBI double in the bottom of the 11th gave sixth-ranked Oregon State a 5-4 win over the Highlanders (Box Score).
UC Riverside (1-3) entered the ninth trailing 4-2 with Scott Schultz on the mound for his second inning of relief work for the Beavers (4-0). Devyn Bolasky got the call to pinch hit against the right hander, and reached on a throwing error by shortstop Tyler Smith.
Two batters later, Clayton Prestridge beat out an infield single, and the Highlanders had runners on first and second with one out. A walk to Eddit Young loaded the bases and ended Schultz's day bringing Max Engelbrekt in from the bullpen.
David Andriese hit a grounder to second which the Beavers tried to turn into a double play. Bolasky scored easily on the play, and Andriese beat the throw to first by a half a step. Clayton Prestridge, who was on second when Andriese made contact, never stopped running and scored as well to tie the game at four.
Trevor Frank faced the minimum six batters in the bottom of the ninth and 10th to keep the game tied, but the Highlanders managed just one base runner of their own in the 10th and 11th.
Donovan Gonzales (0-1) came on in relief of Frank in the bottom of the 11th, and gave up a single to Kavin Keyes to start the inning. A sac bunt moved Keyes to second, and after Jerad Casper received an intentional walk, Matthews ripped a double to left that scored pinch runner Zane Yanzick with the winning run.
Engelbrekt picked up his first win of the season with 2.2 innings of hitless relief, while Gonzales was saddled with ihs first loss of the year.
Unlike Saturday's game, which saw Oregon State score the first seven runs of the day, it was UC Riverside jumping on top early scoring a pair of runs in the top half of the first. Dylan Davis retired the first two Highlanders he faced, but Andriese got the UCR offense started with a single through the right side.
Chavez followed with a single up the middle moving Andriese to second, and a wild pitch moved both baserunners up 90 feet. After Drake Zarate drew a walk, Phil Holinsworth laced a double to right center to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers got both runs back in the bottom of the frame, however, as Oregon State strung together a walk, a double, a wild pitch and a single off of UC Riverside starter Mitch Patito.
It was a one, two, three inning for Patito in the bottom of the second, but a walk, a wild pitch and a single up the middle in the bottom of the third gave Oregon State the lead, 3-2.
Mark Garcia took over for Patito in the bottom of the fifth, and held the Beavers in check into the seventh. Frank took over for Garcia with one out and a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh, and after recording the second out of the inning on a grounder to third, gave up an infield single which put Oregon State up two, 4-2.
The Highlanders remain on the road this week as they travel to Sacramento State for four games this weekend. Friday's first pitch is slated for 2 pm PT, with Saturday's double header set to start at 11 am, and Sunday's game scheduled for noon.
