Sacramento, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team remains on the road this week with a four game-series at Sacramento State beginning with a 2 pm PT first pitch on Friday afternoon.
The Highlanders went 1-3 at the Palm Springs Baseball Tournament last weekend, nearly upsetting sixth-ranked Oregon State in the tournament finale before falling 5-4 to the Beavers in 11 innings.
Clayton Prestridge hit safely in each of the four games, and leads the Highlanders with a .400 batting average and a .526 on base percentage.
Last season, UC Riverside took a run at the program record for walks in a season, and thus far in 2013 the Highlanders look like they have their sites set on it again as they drew 25 free passes in four games over the weekend.
UCR's starting pitchers struggled in their first starts of the season with Dylan Stuart, Jacob Smigelski and Mitch Patito each posting identical 5.79 ERAs coming out of the weekend. Ben Doucette, making his first career collegiate start after 30 relief appearances for the Highlanders, was unable to get out of the first inning against Oregon State on Sunday.
Sacramento State took one of three games at Texas over the weekend, but their Tuesday road tilt at Fresno State was cancelled due to rain.
The Hornets have three batters hitting better than .300 on the season—Nathan Lukes (.385), Rhys Hoskins (.385) and David Del Grande (.333). Despite those lofty marks, Sac State as a team is hitting just .245 on the year.
Brennan Leitao picked up the win for the Hornets in the second game of their Texas series striking out six in seven innings in the 5-3 victory. Tanner Mendonca (0-1, 12.00) and Zach Morgan (0-1, 12.00) weren't so fortunate as they each gave up four earned runs in three innings of work.
The Highlanders own a 20-4 record all-time against Sacramento State including a string of 15 straight wins which came to an end in the final game of last year's three-game series with the Hornets on March 11, 2012 (View All-Time Results).
