2/28/2013 4:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Box Score—Cal Poly 94, UC Riverside 59
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team was without the services of leading scorer Tre'Shonti Nottingham Thursday afternoon due to an injury, and Cal Poly was able to take full advantage in a 94-59 victory in Big West Conference action.
The win pulled the Mustangs (17-9, 11-4) into a tie for first place in the Big West with Pacific (21-6, 11-4) pending the outcome of the Tigers' game at Long Beach State this evening.
Cal Poly led 5-4 with 2:56 gone off the clock, and proceeded to score 45 of the final 54 points of the half to take a 50-13 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs made 55.9 percent of their field goal attempts led by Kayla Griffin's 12 points. Kristen Ale added nine points going three for three from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders struggled to get into their offense without their floor leader who is averaging 18.2 points per game this season. Freshman Brittany Crain led UC Riverside with eight points at the break going three for eight from the floor, but her teammates were a combined two for 20 in the period. The Highlanders 13 points tied the program's Division I era record for fewest points in a half originally set against San Diego back on December 3, 2004.
UCR turned things around in the second half, scoring 21 of the first 33 points to cut the Mustangs' advantage to 28 with 11:37 to go.
The teams traded baskets for most of the remainder of the game, but the Highlanders were never able to get closer than 27 the rest of the way.
UC Riverside's Jamila WIlliams led all scorers on the day with a career-high 21, all of which came in the second half. Crain added 18 in the loss. Molly Schlemer paced four Mustangs in double figures with 16. Nikol Addlson added 14, while Ale and Griffin scored 12 apiece.
The Highlanders finish up their home schedule this Saturday with a 1 pm PT Homecoming game against UC Santa Barbara.
