Chris Patton's Career-High 36 Not Enough As Men's Basketball Falls To Fullerton, 79-67
2/9/2013 11:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Chris Patton poured in a career-high 36 points Saturday evening going 14 for 16 from the field, but it wasn't enough as Cal State Fullerton erased an 11-point Highlanders lead to win 79-67 (Box Score).
Patton scored nine of UCR's first 13 points on the night as the Highlanders pounded the ball inside to build an early 13-5 lead with 5:25 gone in the first. The Titans countered with a mini 6-0 run to close to within two, but with the Highlanders withstood the really and posted their first double digit lead, 25-15 with 7:01 to go before the half.
UCR eventually led by as many as 11 in the period, and it was an 11-point advantage, 40-29, as the teams headed to the locker room. Patton was a perfect seven of seven from the field during the first 20 minutes of play and led all scorers with 17 points, Chris Harriel added 10 as the duo nearly outscored the Titans by themselves.
Cal State Fullerton entered the game as the third highest scoring team in the nation, so the Highlanders knew the game was far from over.
Sammy Yeager put on a clinic in the second half as he made nine of 11 shots from the floor including five of six from long distance for 25 points. He scored the Titans first 10 points of the second as Fullerton cut the lead to five, 44-39, in just 2:27.
The Titans took their first lead of the game, 49-47, on a Yeager three pointer with 13:45 on the clock. Patton continued his hot shooting, going seven of nine from the floor after the break, but for every two-pointer the junior from Australia scored, Fullerton countered with a three, going eight for 14 from beyond the arc in the second half.
It was a Patton jumper that gave the Highlanders their last lead of the game, 55-54, with 9:28 to go, but Yeager answered with a three pointer to give the Titans' a lead they would never relinquish.
Yeager finished with 30 points, while D.J. Seeley added 21. Harriel joined Patton in double figures for UC Riverside with 10 points.
The Highlanders are on the road next week for a pair of games starting with a Wednesday, February 13 game against UC Irvine. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
