Albuquerque, NM—Mitch Patito allowed just four hits over five-plus innings, and David Andriese drove in four runs Sunday afternoon as the UC Riverside Baseball Team picked up a 14-9 win over New Mexico (Box Score).
For the fourth straight game, UC Riverside chased the Lobos' starter before he recorded an out in the fourth inning. Sam Wolfe walked the first two batters he faced in the first, and one batter later, Andriese loaded the bases reaching on a fielding error by New Mexico's third baseman. Kyle Boudreau was hit by a pitch scoring Eddie Young, and Alex Rubanowitz beat out an infield single to score Joe Chavez for a 2-0 UCR lead.
In the top of the second, it was Clayton Prestridge's turn to get hit by a pitch, and Andriese laced a two-out double to left putting the Highlanders up by three.
Wolfe's day ended in the third as UC Riverside pounded out six hits and scored seven runs to build a 10-0 lead. Andriese struck the biggest blow in the inning with a bases loaded double to right that scored three giving him four RBIs in the game.
Devyn Bolasky and Chavez each drove in a run in the top of the sixth putting UCR up 12-0.
Meanwhile, Patito was twirling a shutout giving up lone singles in the third and fifth. The Lobos finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. D.J. Peterson, who hit three home runs in Saturday's double header, led off the inning with a double, and Mitch Garver switched places with him on the very next at bat. Zach Varela came on in relief of Patito and got out of the inning without any additional damage.
Mark Garcia took over for Varela in the bottom of the seventh, but he gave up three hits and walked two before giving way to Antonio Gonzales with four runs in.
Gonzales struck out Erik Suarez to get out of the jam, and the Highlanders added two more runs in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI triple by Young and an RBI double by Chavez.
The Lobos scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as UC Riverside held on for the 14-9 win.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend with a three-game series at Portland. First pitch Friday is slated for 3pm PT.
