Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team remains on the road this week with a three-game weekend series at Portland before taking a break for Final Exams.
The Highlanders are coming off of a four-game split at New Mexico that saw them increase their team batting average from .265 to .292, banging out 55 hits and scoring 44 runs in the series.
Sophomore Joe Chavez was named the Big West Conference Baseball Player of the Week for his efforts as he picked up 13 hits on the week, scored eight runs and drove in nine. He was also a perfect four-for-four in the stolen base department (Read the Press Release).
Chavez leads all Big West Conference freshmen in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. He's in the top five in on base percentage among all Big West players, and in the top 10 in batting average and slugging percentage. He leads the Highlanders in all three categories and is eight for nine in stolen base attempts on the year.
Portland entered the week with a 4-12 record, but has a game Wednesday at Seattle before hosting the Highlanders. One of those victories came in a 2-0 shutout of Big West foe UC Irvine (box score/recap).
The Pilots have just one hitter with a batting average north of .300 in Beau Fraser. His .364 average is nearly 70 points better than his closest teammate, and he also paces the squad with a .424 slugging percentage. Portland has just one home run on the season, and is slugging just .290 as a team.
The Pilots have used six different starting pitchers so far in 2013. Kurt Yinger leads the staff with an 0-1 mark in four starts and a 2.43 earned run average. Travis Radke (1-2, 4.84) and Zach Torson (0-4, 5.40) also each have four starts on the season for Portland, and will likely make up the trio of Pilots that UC Riverside will face over the weekend.
The Highlanders and Portland have squared off against one another on three previous occasions in a three-game series back in 2007 (View All-Time Results). The Pilots took two of three from UCR, with the Highlanders winning the final game by a score of 13-5 (box score). Two-time World Series Champion Dan Runzler was credited with the win in that game.
