Baseball Drops 2-0 Decision At Portland
3/16/2013 12:15:00 PM | Baseball
Portland, OR—For the second straight game offense was at a premium, as the UC Riverside Baseball Team was shut out for the first time this season, 2-0, at Portland Saturday (Box Score).
Jacob Smigelski (1-1) and Kurt Yinger (1-1) traded zeroes in the early going as Smigelski scattered three hits through his first six innings of work, while Yinger allowed just five. The Highlanders (9-9) put runners in scoring position in three of those six frames, but were unable to score.
UC Riverside went in order in the top of the seventh, and in the bottom half, the Pilots (6-12) scored what would prove to be the only runs of the game. Jeff Melby led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, and after a Beau Fraser sac bunt, Caleb Whalen trippled down the left field line to put Portland up 1-0.
One batter later, Ben Grubb doubled to right to make it a 2-0 ballgame, and that was all the offense Yinger and the Pilots would need as they kept the Highlanders off the board in the eighth and ninth.
Yinger threw a complete-game, six-hitter striking out 12 batters while walking none. Smigelski lasted seven innings and allowed just five hits while King six.
The Highlanders and Pilots finish their three-game series tomorrow beginning at 1 pm PT.
