Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team is in Santa Barbara Saturday for the final game of the 2012-13 season Tip against the Gauchos is slated for 7 pm PT.
The Highlanders almost pulled off the upset at Cal Poly Thursday evening, building a 17-point half-time lead, but the Mustangs staged a furious comeback, and escaped with a 68-62 victory (box score/recap)
Chris Patton's 18 points led the way for UC Riverside, improving his scoring average on the season to 13.8 points per game. Chris Harriel also averages in double figures for the Highlanders chipping in at a 10.4 points per game clip.
UC Santa Barbara continues to struggle through an injury-plagued season, and was in danger of missing out on the Big West Conference tournament for the first time since 1997-98 prior to snapping a four-game losing streak over the weekend with an 83-74 victory at Cal State Northridge. That moved UCSB a game and a half ahead of the Matadors for the eighth and final conference postseason berth, but there are no tie breakers that favor CSUN.
After Thursday's win over Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara is tied with the Titans for seventh place in the conference.
Three members of the Gauchos are averaging double figures in scoring on the year—Alan Williams (17.4), Kyle Boswell (13.4) and Taran Brown (11.1). Williams also leads the Big West in rebounding (10.5) and is second in blocked shots (57).
The Highlanders are just 7-25 all-time against UC Santa Barbara (View All-Time Results), but one of those wins came on February, 20 of this year in a 54-45 victory (box score/recap). UCR is winless, however, in 17 meetings at the Thunderdome.
