Baseball's Winning Streak At The Plex Ends With 24-11 Loss To UNLV

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team entered its Tuesday afternoon game with UNLV riding an 11-game winning streak at The Plex, but the Rebels banged out 29 hits against seven different Highlanders pitchers on their way to a 24-11 victory (Box Score).
That leaves the 2012 squad in a three-way tie with the 1995 and 2003 versions of the Highlanders (17-15) for the longest home winning streak in the history of the program.
Donovan Gonzales (0-5) got the start and gave up just a pair of singles in his first two innings of work. The UC Riverside offense staked him to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as last week's Big West Conference Player of the Week, Joe Chavez, drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a passed ball.
The Rebels (24-12) got to Gonzales in the third, however, as the first three batters singled to tie the score. A sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice put UNLV up 3-1.
The Highlanders countered with a three-run frame of their own in the bottom of the third thanks to RBIs by Devyn Bolasky, Clayton Prestridge and Kevin Davidson.
The hit parade continued in the top of the fourth for UNLV, however, as the first five batters reached base. That ended Gonzales's afternoon, and Kevin Sprague came out of the bullpen with a runner on second and nobody out. Sprague plunked Mark Shannon with his second pitch, before getting Brandon Bayardi to hit into a double play, Back-to-back singles by Justin Jones and Patrick Armstrong made it 9-4 Rebels before the Highlanders caught Armstrong attempting to steal second to end the inning.
UC Riverside sent the minimum three batters to the plate in its half of the fourth, and the floodgates really opened in the top of the fifth. Five UNLV hits, two walks and two Highlanders errors put seven runs on the board, and the Highlanders found themselves in a 16-4 hole.
UCR continued to plug away scoring seven more runs on the day, but the Rebels matched them run for run. By the time the dust settled, the Highlanders had allowed the most hits and runs in a single game since they made the transition to Division I prior to the 2002 season.
TJ White was a perfect seven-for-seven at the plate with five runs scored and six RBIs for UNLV. Erik Vanmeetren and Joey Swanner each scored four runs, and Armstrong drove in four in the victory. Bolasky was a perfect three-for-three for UC Riverside and scored three runs. Francisco Tellez drove in three runs after entering the game in the sixth.
The Highlanders travel to UC Davis this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series with the Aggies.
