Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team kept its home unbeaten streak alive Tuesday evening with another come-from-behind victory as they upended the San Diego State Aztecs, 6-3 (Box Score/Highlight Video).
The Highlanders trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of eighth, and had struggled at the plate all night as Aztecs starter Tyler Sapp allowed just three hits in seven innings of work. Ethan Miller took over on the hill to start the eighth, and he ran into trouble immediately.
Pinch hitter Francisco Tellez ripped a double off of the wall in center field, and Joe Chavez drew a walk to put runners on first and second. After Devyn Bolasky laid down a sacrifice bunt, Clayton Prestridge laced a single to left to make it a one run game. David Andriese followed with a single through the left side to tie the score bringing up designated hitter Kyle Boudreau. Boudreau ripped a 2-0 offering into the gap in right for a bases-clearing triple, and came home when Tim Zier's relay throw sailed wide of the mark.
Trevor Frank came in to pitch the ninth for UCR, and retired the side in order for his seventh save of the year.
It is the eighth straight home victory for the Highlanders who last won that many in a row back in the 2009 season.
The Highlanders staked UCR starter Dylan Stuart to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Bolasky beat out an infield single and moved to second when Prestridge was hit by a pitch. David Andriese then lined out to left, but Bolasky strayed too far from second drawing a throw from the Aztecs left fielder. The throw sailed wide of the bag, and Bolasky was able to advance to third.
The Highlanders then executed a double steal for the first run of the game. Boudreau drew a walk to put runners on first and second again, and a wild pitch moved both players up 90 feet, but Cody Hough struck out to end the threat.
Meanwhile, UC Riverside's "staff day" pitchers didn't allow a base hit until the top of the fourth when Zier singled through the left side. Mark Garcia, who replaced starter Dylan Stuart to start the second, got Ryan Muno to hit into a double play, but Jake Romanski drew a walk, and Ty France doubled to center to tie the game at one.
Kevin Sprague got the call out of the pen to start the top of the fifth, and he recorded the first two outs with ease on a ground out and a liner to second. The next batter, Greg Allen, singled to left, and Tim Zier reached on an infield single that Sprague fielded down the left field line. Unfortunately, his throw to first was off the mark, allowing Allen to score.
The Aztecs tacked on what they thought would be an insurance run in the top of the eighth thanks to another two out rally. After Allen and Zier were retired, Muno then doubled to center, and Romanski brought him plateward with a single through the right side of the infield.
The Highlanders are on the road this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series at Cal State Northridge. First pitch Friday is at 3 pm PT.
