Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team looks to keep its undefeated conference record in tact this weekend as they travel to Cal State Northridge for a three-game series with the Matadors.
The Highlanders swept #21 UC Irvine in the first conference series of the season last weekend starting Big West play 3-0 for the first time in the program's history.
David Andriese was named Big West Conference player of the week for his role in the sweep as he reached base all four times in UCR's 4-3 win over the Anteaters on Thursday (box score/recap/highlight video), drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh of a 7-5 victory on Friday (box score/recap/highlight video) and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth in Saturday's 3-2 win (box score/recap/highlight video). For the week, the outfielder went 7-of-11 from the plate with three RBI, one run, and two walks.
UC Riverside split a pair of non-conference games this week against San Diego State dropping a 10-2 decision at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Monday (box score/recap) and extending their home winning streak to eight games with a 6-3 victory at The Plex on Tuesday (box score/recap/highlight video).
Left-hander Dylan Stuart (3-2, 4.12) gets the Friday start for the Highlanders while lefty Ben Doucette (1-1, 5.22) throws on Saturday. Sunday's starter has yet to be determined.
The Matadors took one of three from Long Beach State last weekend, and picked up a 5-2 victory over Loyola Marymount on Tuesday to improve to 13-14 on the season.
CSUN is hitting just .258 as a team, but three regulars are batting better then .300—Nate Ring (.314/.400/.400), Kyle Atti (.312/.404/.354), Michael Livingston (/308/.410/.308) and Ryan Raslowsky (.302/.371/.397). Miles Williams is the team's top power threat as his seven home runs are tied for tops in the Big West, but he is hitting just .221 overall with 24 strikeouts on the season.
Left-hander Jerry Keel is the Matadors top starter on the season with a 3-1 record and a 2.48 ERA, and he is expected to throw Friday afternoon. Right-hander Calvin Copping (2-3, 3.90) has been CSUN's Saturday starter this season, and righty Harley Holt (2-2, 5.20) has gotten the call on Sundays.
The Matadors have a team ERA of 4.49, and have issued the second most walks in the Big West this season.
UC Riverside is 80-79-1 all-time against Cal State Northridge and 31-11 over the last 42 meetings, but the Matadors have won three of the last four including two of three a year ago (View all-time results).
