UC Riverside Baseball Drops Fourth Straight With 19-8 Defeat At UC Davis
4/21/2013 7:04:00 PM | Baseball
Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was trying to avoid a sweep at the hands of UC Davis Sunday afternoon, but their depleted pitching staff gave up 19 hits in a 19-8 loss to the Aggies (Box Score).
For the third straight game, the Highlanders scored first plating two runs in the top of the first. Devyn Bolasky doubled to right center to open the inning, and one batter later, Clayton Prestridge singled to make it 1-0 UC Riverside. Prestridge advanced to second on the play and promptly stole third. David Andriese then lifted a sac fly to right to put the Highlanders up 2-0.
The UCR (17-18, 6-6) defense got off to a rocky start as the first Aggies batter, Tino Lipson, reached on a Nick Vilter fielding error. A Paul Politi double and a sac fly by Steven Patterson tied the score at two.
In the bottom of the second, the Aggies (15-22, 3-9) sent eight batters to the plate scoring five runs to go up 7-2.
The Highlanders bounced back in the top of the third with a pair of scores thanks to an RBI double by Andriese and a double-play grounder by Kyle Boudreau.
UC Riverside starter Mark Garcia (3-4) worked a scoreless bottom of the third, but in the fourth, he gave up a pair of one-out singles, and a two-RBI double to Patterson that made it 9-4 Aggies, and ended his day. Donovan Gonzales came on in relief, and John Williams tripled to left to put UC Davis up six.
UCR battled back with three runs in the top of the fifth, but those were the last runs the Highlanders would score until the top of the ninth. In the meantime, UC Davis plated two in the fifth, one in the sixth, four in the seventh and two in the eighth to lead 19-7.
A Francisco Tellez double scored Matt Ellis in the top of the ninth, but that was all the Highlanders could muster as they dropped their fourth straight game.
UC Riverside travels to San Diego on Tuesday for a 6 pm PT start against the Toreros. They then return to The Plex for a three-game weekend series vs. UC Santa Barbara.
