San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team looks to get back to .500 when they travel to San Diego Tuesday to take on the Toreros in a non-conference match up.
The Highlanders fell to 17-18 overall after dropping a mid week game to UNLV and a three-game conference series to UC Davis over the weekend. The UC Riverside offense scored 26 runs over the four game stint and raised its team batting average to .289 which ranks second in the league. Four regulars now boast batting averages over .300 with Clayton Prestridge pacing the squad at .352.
The UC Riverside pitching, on the other hand, has struggled of late thanks in part to injuries to starters Jacob Smigelski and Mitch Patito. It has been several weeks since either was able to pitch, and the Highlanders gave up a season high 24 runs to UNLV and 15 on Sunday against Davis—games which would have featured Smigelski and Patito as the starters.
Zach Varela makes his first career start as a collegian for UCR on Tuesday. He is 2-0 on the season and has allowed just one earned run in 17.0 innings of relief work. His longest outings of the year are a pair of 2.1 inning performances.
San Diego is coming off a three-game sweep of Santa Clara that improved the Toreros overall record to 24-15.
Junior third basemen Kris Bryant earned National Player of the Week honors after his nation leading 20th long ball of the year set a new school record for most home runs in a single-season. Bryant is hitting .500 in the last four games with five home runs and six RBI.
Max Homick gets the start for the Toreros on Tuesday. He is 4-1 on the season with a 2.88 earned run average. He has made 17 appearances on the season, but this will be just his second start of the year.
UC Riverside is 38-35-1 all-time against San Diego, but have lost the last three games against the Toreros (View All-Time Results).
The Highlanders return to Big West Conference play this weekend when they host UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series at The Plex.
