Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team continues to struggle on the road this season falling to 6-16 away from The Plex, and 0-5 in Big West road games following a 7-4 loss to UC Davis Saturday afternoon (Box Score).
Spencer Koopmans got the start for the Aggies (14-22, 2-9) still looking for his first win of the season after dropping five straight decisions to start the year. The sophomore threw five innings allowing four hits, three walks and just two unearned runs.
The Highlanders (17-17. 6-5) first score came in the to of the first as Francisco Tellez reached on a fielding error by the left fielder, moved to third on a Clayton Prestridge single and a throwing error by the Aggies third baseman, and scored on David Andriese’s sac fly line out to right.
UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette (2-3) retired the Aggies in order in the first, but in the second he struggled with his control hitting Nick Lynch to start the inning, and giving up a one-out walk to Izaak Silva. After striking out Kevin Barker for the second out of the inning, Doucette got Seth Batty to hit a grounder to third for what should have been the final out of the frame, but Joe Chavez couldn’t handle it, and Batty reached to load the bases. Doucette issued his second walk of the inning to Adam Young to force in a run tying the score at one apiece.
The Highlanders put together a two-out rally in the top of the third to tie the game as Andriese reached second on another fielding error by the left fielder, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Phil Holinsworth’s single scored Andriese to make it a 2-1 UCR lead.
The Aggies wasted no time in tying the game again as Mike Mazzara and Paul Politti each singled to open the bottom of the third, and Patterson’s double to left center pushed across the second run of the game for UC Davis.
Neither team was able to score in the fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth, Patterson singled to right with one out and moved to second on a Silva ground out. After Barker drew a walk, Tino Lipson singled through the right side to give Davis its first lead of the day. Young followed with another single to right doubling the Aggies lead.
UC Davis continued to struggle defensively in the top of the eighth as another miscue led to the Highlanders third unearned run of the day. Nick Vilter singled to left with one out and moved to third on an Alex Rubanowitz fielder's choice, as first baseman Austin Logan's throw to second as off the mark.
That put runners on the corners, and the next batter, Cody Hough, drew a walk to load the bases. Devyn Bolasky lifted a sac fly to center to score Vilter, but Tellez struck out swinging to end the threat.
Kevin Sprague came on in relief of Doucette to start the sixth and pitched a scoreless sixth and seveth, but in the eighth, UC Davis touched him for a double and a single before Patterson ripped a home run to right field, to make it 7-3 Aggies.
Despite putting four runners on base in the top of the ninth, the Highlanders were only able to bring one of them home as Vilter's double to center scored Holinsworth with the final run of the game.
UC Riverside and UC Davis complete their three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
