Riverside, CA- The UC Riverside Baseball Team travels to Las Vegas Tuesday afternoon as they face off against UNLV at 3:05pm PT before traveling to nationally ranked Cal Poly this weekend for a three-game conference series.
The Highlanders snapped a seven-game losing streak on Sunday with an 8-5 win over UC Santa Barbara in the finale of their three-game Big West series against the Gauchos. The victory was the 250th in Doug Smith's coaching career.
UC Riverside is batting .289 as a team and Clayton Prestridge leads the charge with a slash line of .352/.442/.422. He had a 17-game hitting streak fall by the wayside Sunday, as he walked twice and was hit by a pitch, but failed to record a hit in his two official at bats of the day.
The Highlanders pitching staff is still in search of some consistency following the loss of starters Mitch Patito and Jacob Smigelski to injury several weeks ago. A series of relief pitchers have tried to fill in as best as they could with varying results, but Coach Smith may have found an answer in Zach Varela. The junior righty now has two starts under his belt, and is 1-0 with a 1.23 earned run average in that roll. He has logged just 7.1 innings in those two starts, however, as the coaching staff increases his pitching count limit with each successive start.
Dylan Stuart (3-5, 4.71) and Ben Doucette (2-4, 4.19) have been the Highlanders mainstays. Doucette is coming off a solid appearance against UC Santa Barbara going seven innings while holding the Gauchos to one run on eight hits. Antonio Gonzales (0-1, 10.29) is expected to get the start on Tuesday at UNLV.
UNLV is 27-16 overall, and has won 17 of 23 at home heading into the week. The Rebels are coming off an 0-4 skid, however, that saw them drop a mid-week game to Arizona State and a conference series to New Mexico. In that time, UNLV allowed 33 runs including a season high 14 in their final game against the Lobos.
The Rebels boast a team batting average of .300 with Patrick Armstrong pacing the squad (.374/.473/.495). Six other regulars top .300, including Brandon Bayardi (.324/.410/.514) who is leading the team with seven home runs.
UC Riverside is 17-6 all-time against UNLV and 7-3 over the last 10 meetings, but the Rebels picked up the win in their last matchup just two weeks ago (Box Score/Recap), scoring a season high 24 runs. (View All-time results).
Cal Poly is 28-13 overall and 8-7 in Big West Conference play after dropping two of three from Long Beach State over the weekend.
The Mustangs offense is hitting .283 and leads the Big West Conference in home runs thanks to sluggers Brian Mundell and Nick Torres who combine for 14 of Cal Poly’s 25 long balls. Denver Chavez (.376/.440/.465) leads the team with 64 hits and 11 stolen bases, while Torres tops the squad with 52 RBIs.
The Highlanders are 80-98 all time against the Mustangs, with Cal Poly coming out on top in each of their last four matchups. (View All-time results).
