Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team welcomes San Diego to The Plex Tuesday evening for the final non-conference game of the season for the Highlanders. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
UC Riverside enters the week coming off a 7-6 victory over #4 Cal State Fullerton on Sunday (Box Score/Recap). The win ended a seven-game skid for the Highlanders, as closer Trevor Frank worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
UCR's offensive production continues to come from Clayton Prestridge (.353/.456/.431), Joe Chavez (.331/.443/.524), Devyn Bolasky (.329/.359/.349) and David Andriese (.326/.372/.416) while the remainder of the team's regulars boasts just one player with a batting average above .250. The Highlanders were hitting .291 as a team on April 17, but have hit just .249 since then.
UC Riverside has been without its regular Saturday and Tuesday starters for a majority of the season, forcing the Highlanders to use a number of relief pitchers in those roles. Zach Varela has emerged as the team's go-to starter on Sundays. He was credited with the victory against Fullerton over the weekend, and in four starts on the year has a 2-0 record with a 2.50 ERA. The team's four other emergency starters are 0-7 on the season with a combined ERA of 13.50.
The Toreros swept Portland in a three-game over the weekend by a combined score of 47-10. The San Diego offense has a slash line of .286/.381/.451 led by junior third baseman Kris Bryant's nation-leading 28 home runs, 70 runs scored and .880 slugging percentage. The Toreros pitching staff has an ERA of 3.84 and has struck out 428 batters in 469.1 innings.
UC Riverside is 38-36-1 all-time against San Diego, but has dropped four straight to the Toreros including a 3-2, 11-inning loss at Fowler Park on April 23 (Box Score/Recap). The Highlanders left 14 runners on base in the game, giving up the game-winning run on a solo home run by Dillon Haupt to lead off the bottom of the 11th.
Max Homick (4-1, 2.69) got the start for San Diego in that game, while Varela got the start for UCR. Starting pitchers for both teams have yet to be set for Tuesday's game.
