Long Beach, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team is headed to Long Beach State for a three-game Big West Conference series this weekend which marks the end of the Highlanders road campaign in 2013. The final three games of the year are slated for May 23-25 against Hawai'i at The Plex.
With six games remaining on the conference schedule, UC Riverside finds itself in seventh place, three games back of Long Beach State who is entrenched in sixth. Both teams are trying to move up the standings and close out the 2013 season with an upper division finish. Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are currently tied for fourth place with identical 12-9 marks.
The Highlanders are coming off of one of their most dramatic wins in the history of the program as they erased an eight-run deficit to defeat San Diego 12-11 in 10 innings on Tuesday evening (Box Score/Recap). Devyn Bolasky scored a UC Riverside record six runs in the game, while David Andriese drove in five runs.
Clayton Prestridge increased his average to .364 thanks to a four-for-six performance and now ranks third in the league in that category. Andriese and Bolasky are each hitting .342.
The Highlanders weekend pitching rotation has settled down over the past several weeks thanks to the emergence of Zach Varela as a reliable Sunday starter. He is 4-0 with 1.54 ERA on the season including 2-0 with a 2.50 earned run average as a starter.
Dylan Stuart (3-7, 5.28) takes to the mound on Friday, while Ben Doucette (2-6, 5.46) gets the nod on Saturday.
The Dirtbags, as Long Beach State is affectionately known, enter the weekend with a 25-25 record. They are coming off of a 3-1 victory vs. Pepperdine on Tuesday after taking two of three from Hawai'i in conference play over the weekend.
Long Beach boasts a pair of the league's best hitters in Jeff McNeil (.354/.407.449) and Michael Hill (.336/.357/.522), but Hill broke his ankle against UCLA on April 23 and has not played since.
The Dirtbags will send Shane Carle (3-8, 3.23) to the hill on Friday, Jake Stassi (4-3, 2.79) on Saturday and David Hill (4-2, 4.29) on Sunday.
The Highlanders are 26-43-1 all-time against the Dirtbags. Long Beach took two of three from the Highlanders a year ago (VIew All-Time Results).
