Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team battled back from a 5-0 deficit Thursday evening, and had the tying run on base in the ninth, but their comeback came up just short as they fell to visiting Hawai'i, 5-4 (Box Score).
The Rainbows (16-33, 11-14) jumped on UC Riverside starter Dylan Stuart (3-9) early as the first three batters he faced reached via a double and two singles to put Hawai'i up 2-0 in the first.
Stuart settled down over the next three-plus innings retiring 11 straight before the Rainbows touched him for three unearned runs in the top of the fifth thanks to two Highlanders (12-32, 8-17) errors.
Hawai'i starter Connor Little (3-6) scattered three hits over the first five innings of play to keep the Highlanders off the board, but all of that changed in the sixth. Devyn Bolasky led off the frame with a single to left center. Joe Chavez moved him to second on a ground out to first, and one batter later, David Andriese singled up the middle for the Highlanders' first run of the game.
Francisco Tellez led off the following inning ripping his fourth homer of the season over the right field fence to cut the Rainbows advantage to three. Kyle Boudreau then doubled to center, and Little walked Nick Vilter on four pitches, forcing Hawai'i to summon relief pitcher Lawrence Chew from the bullpen.
Cody Hough grounded out to third advancing Boudreau and Vilter 90 feet, and Bolasky grounded out to short to make it a 5-3 game.
Tellez got things started for the Highlanders again in the bottom of the ninth, singling up the middle, and moving to second on a pinch hit single by Kevin Davidson. Vilter sacrificed both runners into scoring position, and Hough lifted a sac fly to right scoring Tellez. But Bolasky hit a grounder back to the pitcher for the final out of the inning, and the Rainbows held on for the 5-4 victory.
