Riverside—Francisco Tellez ripped two triples and drove in three runs while Ben Doucette pitched the first complete game of his career as UC Riverside picked up a 7-2 win over Hawaii Friday night (Box Score).
The previous evening, it was the Rainbows jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Highlanders turned the tables on Hawai'i on Saturday scoring three runs in the second and two in the third off of starter Corey MacDonald (7-6).
In the second, Tellez ripped an RBI triple over the head of center fielder to bring in Phil Holinsworth before Nick Vilter hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Tellez. UC Riverside plated one more in the inning when Devyn Bolasky singled through the right side to bring in Alex Rubanowitz who doubled to right field.
Tellez continued the charge for the Highlanders (13-32, 9-18) in the third hitting his second RBI triple of the game to bring in David Andriese before scoring himself on a wild pitch.
Meanwhile, Doucette kept the Rainbows (16-34, 11-15) scoreless through five before Hawaii plated two runs on three hits to get on the board in the sixth.
Connor George started it off for with a line drive up the middle just above Doucette's outstretched glove before Kalei Hanawahine brought him in with the game's third triple. Max Duval followed with a double to left field to score Hanawahine.
UC Riverside answered back, though, scoring one in the sixth, on an RBI single by Bolasky, and one in the seventh, on a Tellez single to right center.
Doucette (2-7) shut out the Rainbows in the last three innings to clinch the victory for UC Riverside. It was the second consecutive complete game for the Highlanders pitching staff as Dylan Staurt worked nine innings on Thursday in the 5-4 loss.
UCR and Hawai'i finish their three-game Big West Conference series as well as their 2013 seasons on Saturday beginning at 1 pm PT. The Highlanders will honor the eight seniors that make up the Class of 2013, in ceremonies prior to the game.
