Baseball Drops Another Pitchers' Duel, 3-1, At #24 Cal Poly
5/4/2013 8:43:00 PM | Baseball
San Luis Obispo, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team found itself in another pitchers' duel with nationally ranked Cal Poly Saturday afternoon, but it was the Mustangs scoring a pair of late runs to come away with the 3-1 victory (Box Score).
For the second straight day it was the bottom of the seventh that did in the Highlanders (18-24, 7-10). On Friday night, the Mustangs (30-14, 10-7) turned a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of home runs. On Saturday, the teams entered the last of the seventh tied at one.
UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette (2-5) scattered five hits through the first six innings of play allowing an RBI single in the third to Nick Torres that put Cal Poly up 1-0. The Highlanders got the run back in the top of the sixth thanks to Clayton Prestridge's RBI single to left center that scored Joe Chavez.
In the Mustangs half of the seventh, Brian Mundell beat out an infield single to start the inning, but Doucette got the next two outs on a fly ball to left and a ground out to short that advanced Mundell to second. After Doucette walked David Armendariz, Jimmy Allen singled through the left side to make it 2-1 Cal Poly.
The Highlanders thought they plated the tying run in their half of the eighth as Prestridge singled to right to open the inning and moved to third on a pair of ground outs. Francisco Tellez was called on to pinch hit with two outs, and he hit a grounder to third. The throw appeared to pull Cal Poly first baseman Tommy Pluschkell off the bag, and that was first base umpire Eric Petersen's initial call. But after consulting with the rest of the men in blue, Tellez was called out, and Prestridge's run was pulled off the board.
UC Riverside Head Coach Doug Smith argued the call, and was ejected from the game.
Kevin Sprague took over on the mound for the Highlanders in the bottom of the eighth, and the Mustangs touched him for an unearned run as Cody Hough's throwing error allowed Denver Chavez to score.
In the top of the ninth, Kyle Boudreau drew a one-out walk, but that was the only base runner the Highlanders could muster, and Cal Poly escaped with the 3-1 win.
The Highlanders and Mustangs play the final game of their three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 pm PT.
