Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball team travels up the coast this weekend to San Luis Obispo for a three-game Big West series against nationally ranked Cal Poly.
The Highlanders snapped a seven-game losing streak and a five-game conference skid on Sunday with an 8-5 victory over UC Santa Barbara (box score/recap/video recap), but dropped a 20-6 decision at UNLV on Tuesday (box score/recap).
UC Riverside's 7-8 record in Big West play has them sitting in seventh place in the conference, a game back of Cal Poly and UCSB who are tied for fifth at 8-7.
As a team, UCR is hitting .283 and has five players with batting averages above .300. Clayton Prestridge leads the team at the plate with a batting average of .348 and ranks sixth in the Big West. Joe Chavez's .336 average is second on the team, and he leads the conference with 14 stolen bases and is third in runs with 34.
The Highlanders weekend rotation will consist of lefty Dylan Stuart (3-5, 4.71), lefty Ben Doucette (2-4, 4.19) and righty Zach Varela (3-0, 0.74).
Cal Poly opened its series last weekend against Long Beach State with an 8-5 win Friday, but dropped the next two to the Dirtbags 3-2 on Saturday and 9-5 on Sunday. Although the Mustangs are just a game over .500 in conference, they are 28-13 overall.
The Mustangs are also batting .283, with four players batting over .300. Cal Poly leads the conference in runs scored thanks in part to the play of Denver Chavez. Chavez is second in the conference with a .376 batting average and leads the Big West with 39 runs scored.
Cal Poly will send right-hander Joey Wagman (9-2, 3.04) to the mound on Friday, left-hander Matt Imhoff (4-3, 2.38) on Saturday and righty Bryan Granger (5-3, 4.91) on Sunday. As a staff, the Mustangs boast a league-leading 349 strikeouts on the season
UC Riverside is 80-98 overall against Cal Poly, and has dropped the past four meetings against the Mustangs (view all-time results).
