Baseball Drops Game One Of Three-Game Series At Nationally-Ranked Cal Poly, 4-1

San Luis Obispo, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking to move back to the .500 mark in conference Friday evening, but the nationally-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pick up a 4-1 victory over the Highlanders (Box Score).
Dylan Stuart (3-6) allowed just five hits and didn't walk a batter through his first six innings of work, and his teammates staked him to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Nick Vilter singled up the middle to open the frame, and came around to score two batters later when Joe Chavez doubled to left center.
That's the only run the could manage against Mustangs starter Joey Wagman (10-2), however, as he scattered five hits over his nine innings of work, striking out seven without walking a batter.
Freshman designated hitter Brian Mundell tied the game with one swing of the bat for Cal Poly (29-14, 9-7), as he turned on Stuart's 3-1 offering and sent it over the left field fence to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
David Aremendariz followed with a single through the left side, and after a John Schuknecht sac bunt, Peter Van Gansen singled to right to put runners on the corners. Elliot Stewart came out of the dug out to pinch hit for Chris Hoo, and he didn't waste any time depositing the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to put the Mustangs up 4-1.
The Highlanders (18-23, 6-8) put two runners on in the top of the eighth, but couldn't score, and Wagman retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the win.
