Volleyball Takes Georgia Tech To Four Sets In Loss

Albuquerque, New Mexico--The UC Riverside Volleyball Team took the ACC's Georgia Tech to four sets Friday afternoon in a 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20 loss in the second game of the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic.
Fabiana Rosas led the Highlanders (0-5) with 11 kills while Ashley Cox and Cristina Maietta each recorded eight. Jennifer Percy led the Yellow Jackets (3-2) with 13 kills.
Neigher team had the advantage early in set one as there were nine ties scores through 10-10. Georgia Tech found its opening, however, rallying back from a 10-8 deficit to take a 13-10 lead, and going on to score 11 of the next 12 points for a 19-11 margin.
The Highlanders made a push by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 4-1 to cut the lead to five, 20-15, but could not muster another rally as Georgia Tech closed out scoring five of the final seven points in the 25-17 victory.
UCR was up by one early in set two before the Yellow Jackets scored six straight points to take a 9-4 lead. The Highlanders mounted a comeback outscoring Georgia Tech nine to five and cutting the lead to one, 14-13, capped off by two consecutive GT errors.
After trading points and again down one, 15-14, UCR could not stop a 3-0 run by Georgia Tech as the lead grew to 18-14. The Highlanders scored a pair to get the lead to two, 18-16, but a 6-2 run by Georgia Tech made it a 22-16 score as the Yellow Jackets held on for the 25-20 win.
After falling behind early in set three, 5-3, UC Riverside capitalized on a GT error and kills by Cox and Rosas to retake the lead, 6-5. The Highlanders then scored six of the next eight points to go up 12-7, capped off by three consecutive Maietta kills.
The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to two on four more occasions throughout the set, the last at 20-18 in which they came back from five points down. Kills from Cox and Dorsey combined with two Georgia Tech errors put UCR at set-point, 24-19, and Alissa Apecechea closed out the frame with a kill for a 25-20 victory.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, the Highlanders need a strong fourth set to force a fifth and final set. UCR came out of the gate taking an 8-1 lead thanks in part to four Georgia Tech errors.
But the Yellow Jackets responded and eventually closed the gap and took a 16-13 advantage, outscoring the Highlanders 15-5. UC Riverside got within two on multiple occasions, the last at 22-20 following a Bri Holmes kill. Unfortunately for UC Riverside, the Yellow Jackets scored the final three points of the set to earn the 25-20 win and take a 3-1 victory in the match.
UC Riverside concludes play at the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic with a 10:30 am PT match against Idaho State on Saturday.
