9/6/2013 2:43:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Box Score - New Mexico 3, UC Riverside 0
Albuquerque, New Mexico - Fabiana Rosas and Ashley Cox led the UC Riverside Volleyball Team's offense Friday afternoon against New Mexico recording nine kills apiece, but the Highlanders fell in straight sets to the Lobos, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-11, to open play at the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic.
UCR (0-4) battled tough in the first set with five ties scores through 9-9. A small rally by New Mexico (3-1) made it a 13-9 score, but the Highlanders rattled off six of the next nine points to get within one, 16-15.
The Lobos countered with two straight points, and although UC Riverside got within two on four more occasions throughout the set, New Mexico kept it just out of reach scoring four of the final five points for the 25-20 win.
It was the Highlanders with the early 2-0 lead in set two after a Cox kill and Lobos error, but New Mexico scored six unanswered to go up 6-2. Unfortunately, UCR could not recover as UNM kept its lead above three points the rest of the way en route to a 25-17 victory.
In the third set, the Lobos led wire-to-wire as they swept the match with a 25-11 win.
UNM's Chantale Riddle led all players with 16 kills.
UC Riverside continues play at the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic with a 4:00 pm PT match against Georgia Tech on Friday.
