Comeback Magic Eludes Men's Basketball In 100-69 Loss At Hawai'i
1/18/2014 11:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Honolulu, HI—Two days after tying the program's Division-I era record for biggest comeback, the UC Riverside Men's Basketball team once again found itself having to dig out of a large hole, falling behind by as many as 40 points Saturday night at Hawai'i. But the Highlanders were unable to capture that same magic, and fell to the Rainbow Warriors, 100-69 (Box Score).
The Highlanders (6-12, 1-3) scored 54 points and shot 70.8 percent from the floor in the second half of Thursday's come-from-behind victory over UC Davis, but there was no carryover into the first half Saturday as UCR missed its first six shots from the floor. Hawai'i capitalized by building a 15-1 lead over the first 4:29 of play. They were also helped out as Taylor Johns picked up two fouls in the first 1:58 forcing the Highlanders' leading scorer to the bench for the next five-plus minutes.
Brandon Spearman led the early Rainbow Warrior (12-5, 1-2) charge scoring seven of the first 12 Hawaii points. Chris Patton finally made the first field goal of the game for UC Riverside on a reverse lay up with 14:23 on the clock to make it a 17-5 game
The Highlanders got into a bit of an offensive rhythm shortly thereafter, cutting the Rainbow Warriors' advantage to 10 with 12:29 remaining in the period, but they were unable to keep Hawai'i off the scoreboard for any length of time. It was a 26-14 Rainbow Warriors lead with 9:45 to go, when Hawai'i went on an 13-2 run to increase its lead to 23, at 39-16. Johns picked up his third personal with 3:20 remaining and had to sit the rest of the half.
Hawai'i would increase its lead to 25 on two occasions before converting an old-fashioned three-point play on the Rainbow Warriors' final offensive possession to take a 26-point lead into the locker room, 56-30.
U of H had three players in double figures in the first half led by Spearman and Christian Standhardinger's 15 apiece. Garrett Nevels added 12. Sam Finley led the Highlanders with 10.
It was more of the same early in the second as the Rainbow Warriors extended their lead to 30 with 4:24 gone in the second. Standhardinger scored six of the first 12 Hawai'i points during that run. Three minutes later, Spearman hit a jumper and a free throw to push the Hawai'i advantage to 36, and with 8:40 remaining a Quincy Smitha jumper gave the Rainbow Warriors their largest lead of the night at 86-46.
Standhardinger led all scorers with 27 points followed by Spearman with 18, Isaac Fotu with 16 and Nevels with 12. Finley paced the Highlanders with 19—his seventh straight game scoring in double figures. Ausitn Quick and Patton joined him in double figures with 15 and 11 respectively.
The 100 points allowed by the Highlanders was the third most in the Division I history of the program, and the most ever in Big West Conference play.
UC Riverside returns to the mainland this week for home games against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, January 23 and Cal Poly on Saturday, January 25. Both games tip off at 7 pm PT.
