Steven Jones' Double-Double Leads Men's Basketball Past Cal Poly 61-58
1/25/2014 10:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Steven Jones posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double Saturday night as the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team erased an 11-point Cal Poly lead to upend the Mustangs, 61-58. The sophomore guard scored six of the Highlanders last 10 points as UCR ended the game on a 10-0 run to secure the victory (box score).
The Highlanders didn't deviate from their recent modus operandi of falling behind early by double figures. Steven Thornton scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer, but the Mustangs countered by running off 14 straight to take an 11-point lead with 11:27 to go in the first half. Cal Poly's Dave Nwaba did most of the damage on his own, as he scored the Mustangs first 11 points. An old-fashioned three-point play by Maliik Love capped the run, and put UC Riverside back on its collective heals.
Nwaba finished the half with 13 points on four-of-five shooting from the floor, but the rest of the Mustangs made just five of 21 shots which allowed the Highlanders to climb back into the game.
UC Riverside trailed by six at the break, but netted 11 of the first 16 points after halftime to tie the score with 17:21 to go.
A Sam Finley three-pointer with 14:50 on the clock gave the Highlanders their second lead of the game, 36-33. A Taylor Johns free throw on UCR's next possessions gave the Highlanders their largest lead of the night, but it was short-lived.
After tying the score on three separate occasions, the Mustangs regained the lead with 8:41 to go thanks to a Ridge Shipley three-ball. The Highlanders' offense stalled, and Cal Poly increased its lead to eight over the next four minutes. They would score just two more points the rest of the way, on a Shipley lay up.
That basket came with 3:29 remaining, and made the score, 58-51 Mustangs. A Jones' jumper cut the lead to five, and a pair of free throws by Austin Quick with less than two minutes to play sliced the advantage to three. Jones converted on a lay up on the Highlanders subsequent possession to cut the lead to one. Jones put the Highlanders on top for good the next trip down the floor, and Sam Finley's free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining sealed the win.
Chris Patton led UC Riverside with 17 points, while Finley reached double figures in scoring for the ninth straight game with 10 points. The Highlanders held the Mustangs to 38.6 percent shooting on the night, and made 22 of 25 free throws. Nwaba paced Cal Poly with 17 points, while Chris Eversley added 13 points and Love chipped in with 10.
