Johns' 19-Point, 11-Rebound Effort Not Enough As Men's Hoops Falls, 70-69, To Sac State
11/17/2014 10:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside– The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team was looking to start the season 2-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign as the Highlanders hosted Sacramento State at the SRC Arena. Despite a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double by Taylor Johns, UCR came up just short falling, 70-69, to visiting Sacramento State.
The Highlanders were also trying to exact a bit of revenge from the Hornets, as Sac State nipped UC Riverside at the finish line last season, 69-67, in Sacramento.
Although the Highlanders trailed by as many as nine points on the night, they took their first lead late in the first, and led by seven following a Bland three-pointer with 6:05 remaining in the game. That capped a 7-0 Highlanders' run and caused Sacramento State Head Coach Brian Katz to call time out.
Whatever he said during the break must have worked, because the Hornets scored the next five points over the next 60 seconds to make it a two-point game.
The teams traded baskets until the 2:52 mark, when Steven Thornton connected on a layup and converted the subsequent free throw putting UC Riverside back up by three.
Those were the last points the Highlanders would score, though, as Sac State forced them into four errant three-pointers and one turnover down the stretch. Meanwhile, Mikh McKinney's layup with 1:15 to go made it a one-point UCR lead, and on the Highlanders' next possession, Mckinney stole the ball which led to a Cody Demps' jumper putting the Hornets ahead by one, 70-69.
The Highlanders had two more looks at the basket on their final possession, but neither Austin Quick nor Bland was able to connect.
Johns paced UC Riverside in scoring on the night, but only had six points and one rebound after the break. Thornton poured in all 14 of his points in the final 20 minutes of play. Defensively, the Highlanders had difficulty containing the Hornets in the second half as Sac State made 64.0 percent of its shots from the floor.
McKinney's 22 points led all scorers, while Zach Mills (15), Eric Stuteville (12) and Dylan Garrity (11) joined him in double figures.
The Highlanders hit the road this Friday as they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for a 6 pm PT tip against the #25 Utes.
