Men's Basketball Travels To Bakersfield, Hosts Portland State

Bakersfield, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team looks to move back over the .500 mark this week as the Highlanders travel to Bakersfield on Tuesday, December 2 for a 7 pm PT tip, and host Portland State on Saturday, December 6 at 5 pm.
UCR improved its record to 3-3 on the year Saturday with a 76-56 victory over Abilene Christian (box score/recap). Taylor Johns (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Alex Larsson (12 points, 11 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles in the win.
Jaylen Bland leads the Highlanders with a 14.2 points per game scoring average, while Johns is right behind at 13.8. UC Riverside is making 45.5 percent of its field goals on the year, and 39.0 percent of its three-pointers.
Bakersfield is 1-5 on the season following a 68-66 loss to South Dakota on Sunday. The Roadrunners also have loses to Hawai'i (72-65) and San Diego State (51-27) on their ledger. Their lone win of the season came at home against Delaware on November 23.
Aly Ahmed is the 'Runners leading scorer averaging 14.2 points per game thanks to 54.5 percent shooting from the floor. Kevin Mays is almost averaging a double-double at 9.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
The Highlanders are 30-41 all-time against Bakersfield (view results), and the 'Runners won the last meeting between the clubs—89-80 at Bakersfield on December 22, 2010 (box score/recap).
Portland State began the 2014-15 campaign with wins in each of its first four games including victories over USC (76-68) and CSUN (63-55). That streak came to an end Sunday with a 81-59 loss at Oregon.
The Vikings are averaging 74.4 points per game this season, and boast five players in double figures—DaShaun Wiggins (15.8), Braxton Ticker (12.8), Bryce White (12.4), Tim Douglas (12.0) and Tiegbe Bamba (11.0). They are making 42.5 percent of their shots from beyond the arc and have taken 43 more free throw attempts than their opponents this season.
Portland State is vulnerable on defense, however, as opponents are making 45.8 percent of their field goal attempts an 39.8 percent of their three-pointers. They are also averaging nearly six more rebounds per game than the Vikings.
UC Riverside is 1-3 all time against Portland State (view results), including a 66-58 road loss on February 23, 2012 (box score/recap).
