#23 San Diego State Tops Men's Basketball, 61-33
12/22/2014 10:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball
San Diego, CA—The 23rd-ranked San Diego State Men's Basketball Team beat UC Riverside 61-33 Monday evening, but the final score was of secondary importance to fans of both teams as they were more concerned with the condition of Aztecs' forward Dwayne Polee II. The senior from Los Angeles, California collapsed facedown on the floor with 11:08 to go in the first half and the Aztecs leading 14-8. He lay motionless for approximately 15 minutes as medical personnel tended to him.
The crowd of 12,414 gave him a standing ovation as he was lifted onto a stretcher. He was able to shake hands with teammates as he left the court and was taken to a local hospital. Please visit the San Diego State athletics website for updates on Polee's condition.
The Highlanders (6-5)scored on their following possession, but the Aztecs ran off the next 10 points to go up 24-10. A Jaylen Bland free throw with 3:55 ended the six-and-half minute drought, but that was the last point UC Riverside would score in the half.
Overall, the Highlanders were five of 24 from the floor in the first after making four of their first six shots of the game. They scored just three points over the final 16:07 of the period.
Thankfully, UC Riverside was playing well on the defensive end too, holding the Aztecs (9-3) to 38.5 percent shooting including 4 of 14 (28.6%) from long range, and two of eight (25.0%) from the free throw line. Had they been able to contain Aqeel Quinn (15 points), the deficit would have been even less, but as it stood, the Highlanders trailed 26-11 at the break.
Thornton scored the first six points of the game for UCR, and led the Highlanders in scoring at halftime.
Defense continued to dominate in the early part of the second as both teams went one for four from the field over the first 4:01, and UCR committed four miscues to make it a 30-14 ballgame.
The Aztecs effectively put the game away over the next four minutes and change, however, as they scored 11 of the next 14 points to take a 24-point lead, 41-17.
Quinn led all scorers with 18 points, while Bland paced the Highlanders with nine. Johns grabbed 11 rebounds and scored seven points in the loss.
UC Riverside takes a week-long break for the holidays, returning to the SRC Arena on Tuesday, December 30 for a 7pm PT tip against Morgan State.
