2014 Baseball Season Gets Underway This Weekend With Four-Game Homestand

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team begins its 2014 season this weekend with a quartet of home games at The Plex. The Highlanders begin a three-game series with San Francisco on Friday, February 14 at 6 pm. Games two and three against the Dons are on Saturday, February 15 and Sunday February 16 with first pitch for both games at 1 pm. On Monday, February 17, Washington State travels to the Inland Empire for a 12 pm start time.
The Highlanders went 10-17 last season in Big West competition, picking up three wins over #21 UC Irvine, and a victory over #4 Cal State Fullerton in the process.
The team's top offensive producer from a year ago, middle infielder Joe Chavez (.312 avg/.415 obp/.490 slg/17-23 SBs) is back for his junior campaign. He is joined by senior outfielder David Andriese (.335/.374/.426), junior outfielder Devyn Bolasky (.333/366/.351), sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Francisco Tellez (.320/.395/.590), junior middle infielder Alex Rubanowitz (.250/.337/.318), junior infielder Nick Vilter (.215/.348/.310), and senior corner infielder Cody Hough (.315/.324/.344).
Quite a bit of the pitching staff returns from last year as well. senior right-hander Jacob Smigelski (1-1, 6.03) will get the start on Friday, followed by senior left-hander Ben Doucette (3-7, 4.98) on Saturday, junior left-hander Antonio Gonzales (0-2, 9.38) on Sunday and senior right-hander Zach Varela (5-0, 1.54).
UC Riverside is 14-3 all-time against the Dons (view all-time results) and took two of three from San Francisco when they last met back in the 2010 season.
The Highlanders and Washington are 3-3 in their all-time series, but have not faced one another since the 1989 season (view all-time results).
