Hawai'i Outduels Men's Basketball, 87-76
2/13/2014 10:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team was hoping to exact some revenge over the Rainbow Warriors Thursday evening, as Hawai'i hung a 31-point defeat on the Highlanders early in the season, but Christian Standhardinger scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in an 87-76 victory over the Highlanders (box score).
Back on January 18, the Rainbow Warriors (17-7, 6-4) jumped out to a 15-1 lead in the first 4:29 of play and cruised to a 100-69 win. It was a much closer game Thursday, as the teams battled bucket for bucket over the first 10 minutes of play.
Hawai'i led 17-16 with 10:26 to go in the half, but the Rainbow Warriors went on a 10-0 run over the next two-and-half minutes led by six points from Standhardinger. They pushed their lead to as many as 13 in the first, but UC Riverside scored eight of the final nine points of the half, and Hawai'i took a six-point lead into the locker room, 36-30.
Standhardinger nearly recorded a double-double in the first 20 minutes with 12 points and eight rebounds. As a team, the Rainbow Warriors hit 54.2 percent of their shots in the period.
The Highlanders (8-16, 3-7) continued to close the gap early in the second slicing the lead to three with just 2:39 gone in the second. Chris Patton scored four points during the run, but Hawai'i countered by scoring 16 of the next 20 points to push its advantage to 15, 56-41.
A 7-0 UCR run midway through the period reduced the lead to single digits again, 61-53, with 9:02 remaining, but that was as close as the Highlanders would get.
Standhardinger scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the second, while Garrett Nevels added 13 of his 20 after the break. Patton and Taylor Johns kept the Highlanders in the game over the final 20 minutes with 14 and 13 points respectively.
UC Riverside hits the road this Saturday for a quick trip to UC Irvine for a 7 pm PT tip against the front-running Anteaters.
