Honolulu, Hawai'i - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (4-19, 0-10) traveled to the Aloha State Thursday hoping to head back to the mainland with a win, and although the blue and gold led by 10 in the first half, Hawai'i (12-10, 6-4) rallied back for a 67-54 victory. Box Score.
The Highlanders were sluggish out of the gate missing their first seven shots as UH took a 5-0 lead a little more than three minutes into action. UC Riverside rallied, scoring back-to-back buckets en route to an 18-5 run that put the score at 18-10 with 9:14 left in the half. UCR made 9 of 14 shots during that span as all five players on the court contributed.
The Highlanders' lead reached as high as 10 on two occasions, the second at 23-13 at the 6:46 mark, before the Rainbow Wahine made a run scoring five straight as part of a 15-2 run to close out the half. UH's defense limited UCR to just 1-of-12 from the field while holding them without a point for over four minutes to conclude the period.
UC Riverside's scoring drought lasted 2:41 into the second half until Natasha Hadley hit a jumper to make it a 32-27 ball game. The 'Bows scored the next five straight to push the lead out to double-digits, 37-27, with just over 15 minutes left.
The teams' traded buckets over the next five and change as the lead fluctuated between eight and 10 points, until Hawai'i increased its advantage to 15 on the three occasions. The Highlanders kept pressuring, and whittled the margin down to 10, 60-50, with just under two minutes remaining.
That was as close as UC Riverside would come, however, as UH held on for the 13-point win.
Brittany Crain scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead all players, while Annelise Ito added 14 points for the Highlanders. Morgan Mason led two UH players in double-figures with 15 points.
For the game, the 'Bows outshot UCR 43.4 percent to 37.9 percent, while pulling down 42 rebounds compared to 27 for the blue and gold.
UC Riverside now travels back to the mainland for a Saturday, February 15 match up against UC Irvine at 5 pm PT at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
