Women's Basketball Stuns UC Irvine, 87-75, For First BWC Victory Of Season

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team snapped a 16-game losing streak Saturday afternoon stunning UC Irvine, 87-75, in Big West Conference action at the SRC Arena. The Highlanders won their first league game of the season, improving to 1-10 in BWC play and 5-19 overall. The Anteaters fall to 12-12, 5-5. Box Score. Highlight Video.
UCR also snapped two other streaks: an 18-game Big West Conference slump, as well as a 16-game home league losing streak. The last Highlanders victory came against Bakersfield, 85-66, on December 3, 2013, and the last BWC win came at Cal State Fullerton, 64-45, on February 9, 2013.
Four different UC Riverside players scored in double-figures Saturday led by Brittany Crain's 22 points. Natasha Hadley added 19 while Akilah Martin scored a career-high 17, and Simone DeCoud chipped in with 13.
UCR hit 53.8 percent of its shots from the field including a blistering 61.1 percent, 11-of-18, from three-point range while limiting the Anteaters to 39.7 percent from the field. Camille Buckley scored a game-high 28 points while grabbing 15 rebounds to lead UCI.
In the first half, UC Irvine had the early advantage leading by as many as 13 points, 37-24, at the 4:55 mark. UC Riverside cut the margin to seven at the half, and scored eight straight out of the gate in the second period to go up 42-41 with 17:57 remaining.
The squads traded baskets with four tie scores over the next four minutes until the Highlanders took the lead for good, 54-52, following a pair of Martin free throws at 13:51. UCR's lead reached eight, 60-52, but the Anteaters rallied for six unanswered points cutting the margin down to a single possession, 60-58, with 11:13 left.
The lead stayed between two and six points until a Crain three-pointer at 7:56 put UCR back on top by seven, 71-64. The Highlanders lead increased to as high as 13, 85-72, with 2:02 to go, as UC Riverside had its first Big West Conference victory in hand.
The Highlanders will now prepare for UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, February 20 at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
