Baseball Drops 2-0 Pitchers' Duel At Texas State
2/21/2014 7:18:00 PM | Baseball
San Marcos, TX—UC Riverside and Texas State engaged in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel Friday evening, with the Bobcats silencing a potent Highlanders' offense for a 2-0 victory (box score).
After banging out 54 hits and scoring 33 runs in its first four games of the season, UC Riverside's bats were stymied at Texas State as the Bobcats' Lucas Humpal (1-0) tossed a complete-game four-hitter.
The Highlanders (3-2) managed to place just three runners in scoring position on the evening, and none made their way to third, as Humpal struck out 13 batters and walked just two.
UC Riverside starter Jacob Smigelski (1-1) was almost Humpal's equal, allowing four hits and one walk in seven innings of work.
The Bobcats' (3-2) first run came in the bottom of the third as Colby Targun began the inning with a single through the right side. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second, and one batter later, Targun advanced to third on a passed ball. Cody Lovejoy drove him home with a double to down the left-field line.
Dylan Stuart came on in relief in the seventh, and gave up a solo home run off the bat of Tyler Pearson for the final margin of victory.
