Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team went 3-1 to open the 2014 season taking two of three from San Francisco over the weekend and beating Washington State in a single game on Monday. The Highlanders will look to improve on their best start since the 2010 season (4-0) this weekend as they travel to Texas State for a three-game series before returning home to face San Diego State on Tuesday.
UCR's offense exploded for 33 runs in the four games as the Highlanders recorded a .365 batting average, a .448 on base percentage and a .486 slugging percentage.
Joe Chavez hit safely in all four games and is hitting .556 on the season with a .636 on base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage. He has also scored nine runs already, and is five-for-five in the stolen base department.
Francisco Tellez also hit safely in all four games as he drove in 10 runs and slugged .700 with three doubles and a home run.
The Highlanders will keep the same starting rotation this week with Jacob Smigelski (1-0, 2.35) getting the start on Friday. He scattered eight hits over 7.2 innings in the season-opening win over the Dons.
Ben Doucette (0-1, 10.38), who struggled in his 2014 debut, will look to turn things around on Saturday, and Antonio Gonzales (0-0, 3.86) will close out the series with the Bobcats on Sunday.
Zach Varela (1-0, 2.35) gets the start on Tuesday as the Highlanders welcome San Diego State to The Plex for a 6 pm PT first pitch.
Texas State split its first four games of the 2014 season defeating Michigan and Air Force, but falling to Washington at the Texas State Baseball Invitational, and losing a tight, 4-3 decision at Rice on Tuesday evening.
San Diego State took two of three from San Jose State over the weekend before beating Loyola Maryount on Tuesday by a score of 9-2.
Texas State and UC Riverside have never squared off against one another in baseball, while the Aztecs are 35-21-1 all-time against the Highlanders (view all-time results). San Diego State took two of three a year ago from UC Riverside.
