San Marcos. TX—Texas State completed a three-game sweep of the UC Riverside Baseball Team Sunday afternoon as The Highlanders' pitching staff struggled with its control in a 7-5 loss to the Bobcats (box score).
UC Riverside gave up just seven hits on the day, but walked six, threw three wild pitches, hit three batters and committed one balk.
The Highlanders jumped on top first, scoring an unearned run in the top of the second. Nick Vilter laced a two-out single to left, and the next two batters, Matt Ellis and Alex Rubanowitz, each reached on Bobcats' errors. The second miscue allowed Vilter to score with the first run of the game.
Texas State stranded two base runners in the bottom of the first, but they capitalized in the second loading the bases with no outs. The next batter, Preston Dorsey, grounded out to third to tie the score. A throwing error by catcher Matt Ellis allowed the second run to scamper home, and Cody Lovejoy lifted a sacrifice fly to right to put the Bobcats up 3-1.
The Highlanders allowed single runs in the third and fourth to fall behind 5-1, and a Tanner Hill single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth put Texas State up six, 7-1.
Meanwhile, Bobcats' starter Austen Williams allowed just two hits, walking three and striking out seven in his six innings of work. Tyler Davenport came on in relief of Williams to start the top of the seventh, and was met by a Vilter double to left. One batter later, Cody Hough's pinch-hit double gave the Highlanders their second run of the game.
UC Riverside threatened again in the eighth putting runners at second and third with two outs. The Bobcats brought in Justin Dellinger from the pen to face Vilter who struck out swinging for the third out of the inning.
Hunter Lemke took to the mound in the ninth and recorded the first two outs on a groundout and a strike out. The Highlanders pieced together another two-out rally, however, as Joe Chavez singled to center, moved to second on defensive indifference by the Bobcats, and scored when Francisco Tellez singled up the middle. Devyn Bolasky reached on an infield single, and David Andriese doubled to center to cut the Texas State lead to two, 7-5.
Lemke finally got the last out of the game with a strikeout of Thomas Walker.
Antonio Gonzalez took the loss for UC Riverside falling to 0-1 on the season.
The Highlanders return to the Inland Empire for a Tuesday, February 25 meeting with San Diego State at The Plex. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
