Anaheim, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team's 2013-14 season came to an end Thursday evening in the First Round of the Big West Conference Tournament, as the Highlanders fell 63-43 to top seeded UC Irvine (Box Score).
The Anteaters won both regular season meetings between the clubs by double digits, but UC Riverside knew the third match-up would be even more difficult as they were without the services of freshman guard Sam Finley. Finley was injured late in The Highlander's March 8 game at Long Beach State, and his 12.5 points per game were unavailable to the Highlanders for the tournament.
UC Riverside scored the first points of the game on a Chris Patton layup, and the score was tied at four with 16:29 to go in the first, but the Anteaters scored the next 12 points of the game to go up 16-4.
The lead vacilated between seven and 13 throughout the rest of the half, and UC Irvine led 34-22 at the break.
Big West Conference Freshman of the Year Luke Nelson drained a three-pointer to start the second half, giving the 'Eaters their largest lead of the game at 15, 37-22. A few possessions later it was a 17-point UC Irvine advantage, and it eventually grew to 22.
Will Davis, III led the Anteaters with 16 points while Nelson added 14. Nick Gruninger paced the Highlanders with 10 and Austin Quick added nine.
