Baseball Bounces Back With 3-2 Win Over Visiting Stony Brook

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team bounced back after Friday's tough, 2-1 loss to beat visiting Stony Brook, 3-2, in the second game of a three-game series between the clubs at The Plex (Box Score).
Through the first five innings it appears as if the Highlanders (10-9) were in for a repeat performance of Friday's game in which they managed just five hits.
Stony Brook (5-7) starter Frankie Vanderka (1-2) allowed just one hit through the first five frames retiring 15 of the 16 batters he faced.
By then, the Seawolves offense had staked him to a 2-0 lead scoring single runs in the second and fifth. Kevin Krause opened the second with a double down the left field line, and one batter later, after a wild pitch moved Krause to third, Robert Chavarria singled up the middle for the first run of the game.
In the fifth, Jack Parenty singled to open the top of the inning, moved to second on a sac bunt, and advanced to third on a balk. Krause then singled through the right side to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.
Both of those runs were scored off of UC Riverside starter Zach Varela who allowed seven hits and walked two in six innings of work.
The junior had won seven straight decisions entering the game dating back to last season, and appeared in danger ofhaving that streak snapped until the UC Riverside offense woke up in the bottom of the sixth.
Alex Rubanowitz began the inning with a single to right and promptly stole second. Two batters later, Francisco Tellez laced a single up the middle scoring Robanowitz and moving to second on the throw home. Devyn Bolasky then ripped a liner to left, but the left fielder, Parenty, appeared to lose the ball in the lights. It glanced off his glove and got by him for a double, and the Highlanders tied the score at two apiece.
David Andriese drew a walk to put runners at first and second, and Nick Vilter singled to left to give UC Riverside its first lead of the series.
Varela (3-0) turned the game over to the Highlanders bullpen for the final three innings as Angel Landuzari pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Kevin Sprague faced the minimum three batters in the top of the ninth for his second save of the season.
The final game of the three-game series between UC Riverside and Stony Brook is scheduled for Sunday, March 16 at 1 pm PT.
