Baseball Drops Conference Opener At UC Irvine, 8-0
3/28/2014 10:17:00 PM | Baseball
Irvine, CA—UC Irvine starter Andrew Morales faced just two batters over the minimum Friday night allowing four hits and striking out 12 Highlanders in an 8-0 complete-game victory over UC Riverside in the conference opener for both clubs (box score).
Morales brought a 4-0 record and a 0.62 ERA into the game and retired the first six batters in order before Drake Zarate singled to center to lead off the top of the third.
By then, the UC Irvine (16-8, 1-0) offense had staked Morales to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Taylor Sparks sacrifice fly and a Jonathan Munoz RBI double, both of which came in the bottom of the first.
Following Zarate's single, Morales struck out Matt Ellis, Zarate was caught stealing and Alex Rubanowitz grounded out to end the inning.
The 'Eaters picked up another run off of UC Riverside (11-11, 0-1) starter Jake Smigelski (3-3) in the bottom of the fourth. Jerry McClanahan led off the inning with a single to left and a Evan Cassolato sacrifice bunt moved McClanahan to second. Ryan Cooper followed with a single to left, and Kris Paulino lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
The Highlanders continued to struggle against Morales picking up a Francisco Tellez single in the fifth and a Devyn Bolasky single in the seventh.
UC Irvine broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh stringing together four straight hits off of Smigelski to begin the inning. That made the score 5-0 Anteaters, and the Highlanders made the call to the bullpen bringing in Jordan Kron.
McClanahan greeted Kron with an RBI single to left, and one out later, an errant Kron pick off attempt allowed Munoz to score from third.
Irvine tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth for the final 8-0 score.
