Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team begins the Big West Conference portion of its schedules this weekend as the Highlanders travel to UC Irvine for a three-game weekend series with the Anteaters. First pitch Friday is slated for 6:30 pm PT at Anteater Ballpark.
UC Riverside (11-10) is coming off a difficult home loss to San Diego as the Highlanders committed six errors which led to seven unearned runs in a 13-8 loss to the Toreros. That tied the program record for most errors in a single game. Nick Vilter and Francisco Tellez continue to pace the Highlanders' offense. Vilter has reached base in all 21 contests this year, and both he and Tellez are hitting better than .400 on the season.
UC Irvine is 16-8 entering the weekend following a 7-4 mid-week victory at Bakersfield. The 'Eaters offensive slash line is .266/.352/.359. The pitching staff has an ERA of 2.66 and has walked just 56 batters in 220.0 innings of work.
The Highlanders will throw right-handers Jake Smigelski (3-2, 1.26) and Zach Varela (3-0, 2.75) on Friday and Saturday respectively, and lefty Ben Doucette (1-2, 4.79) on Sunday.
UC Riverside is 26-29 all-time against Irvine after sweeping the Anteaters in a three-game series a year ago when Irvine was ranked number 21 in the nation (view all-time results).
