Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team (19-15, 0-1) opened Big West Conference play with a 7-3 loss to Hawai'i (16-14, 1-0) on Friday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field. Box Score.
The Rainbow Wahine pounced on UCR starter Alyssa Razo, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Razo allowed a one-out solo homer, and proceeded to walk the next four straight batters. A long sac fly to center field then scored the third run of the inning as Hawai'i went up 3-0.
The Highlanders got one run back in the second, as Taylor Wright's two-out double to right centerfield scored Kaylie Atkinson from first.
Razo settled down after the first inning, retiring the 'Bows in order in both the second and third innings.
In the fourth, however, Hawai'i scored a pair to go up 5-1. With runners at second and third following a lead-off double and fielder's choice, Ulu Matagiese singled to drive in one run. With two outs, Lindsey Willmon lifted a sac fly to right field to plate the other.
The next frame, Kayla Wartner blasted a two-out home run to right center to put the 'Bows on top, 6-1.
UC Riverside responded in the bottom of the fifth as a single and a walk put two runners on. A double play ended the threat leaving one runner on with two outs, but the Highlanders still capitalized as Karina Romero beat out an infield single, allowing the runner on third to come home.
The Highlanders got a run closer in the sixth as Ashley Ercolano hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 6-3.
Hawai'i countered in the top of the seventh with three straight singles, plating one in the process. Razo got the next three batters out to end the threat and head to the bottom of the seventh, but UH pitcher Loie Kesterson retired the Highlanders in order as UH held on for the victory.
These teams complete their three-game Big West Conference series with a doubleheader starting at noon PT Saturday at Amy S. Harrison Field.
