UC Riverside Baseball Drops Pitchers' Duel, 2-1, To West Virginia
3/8/2014 9:09:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—The UC Riverside and West Virginia Baseball Teams engaged in a thrilling pitchers' duel Saturday night at The Plex, but despite several late Highlanders scoring chances, it was the Mountaineers emerging with the 2-1 victory (Box Score).
The low score wasn't for a lack of base runners, as the teams combined to leave 22 runners on base.
West Virginia starter Sean Carley (2-0) was nearly unhittable in the early going, allowing just three hits through his first five innings of work. Ben Doucette (0-2) tried to match him, putting up goose eggs in the first two frames, but the Mountaineers got to him in the third. Taylor Munden laced a one-out double down the left field line, and one batter later, Billy Fleming singled to right making it 1-0 West Virginia.
In the fourth, the Mountaineers stranded a runner at second, and in the fifth, they left runners at first and third. By that time, Doucette had thrown 93 pitches, and Head Coach Doug Smith brought Angel Landuzari in out of the pen.
West Virginia put runners on second and third with two outs against Landuzari, but once again the Highlanders held.
Carley's command started to elude him in the sixth as he walked Devyn Bolasky and David Andriese to open the frame. But he induced a double-play grounder off the bat of Nick Vilter and struck out Drake Zarate to keep the Mountaineers on top.
Landuzari pitched a scoreless top of the seventh, and UC Riverside threatened once again in their half of the inning putting runners at first and second with two outs. A Francisco Tellez grounder to short got Carley out of the inning.
Landuzari continued to roll in the eighth as he retired the side in order. With Carley at the 100 pitch mark, the Mountaineers went to their bullpen bringing in Ross Vance. He retired Bolasky on a grounder for the first out, but walked Andriese, causing West Virginia to bring its closer, Pascal Paul, into the game.
Vilter greated Pail with a single through the left side, and both runners moved up 90 feet on a Zarate ground out, but Matt Ellis popped up as another threat fell by the wayside.
The Mountaineers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth strining together two singles and a ground out, and they would need it as the Highlanders once again threatened in the ninth. With two outs, Chavez walked, and Tellez singled through the right side. Bolasky then singled to center cutting the West Virginia lead in half. Paul struck out Andriese with the tying run on second to end the game.
UC Riverisde hosts Sacramento State on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT, and takes on West Virginia once again at 5 pm.
