Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team rallied back from a 6-0 deficit to defeat Utah State 8-6 Sunday afternoon in game four of the Highlander Classic at Amy S. Harrison Field. Box Score.
The Highlanders dug a hole early in the game giving up six runs in the second inning as the Aggies recorded four hits while the UCR defense committed two errors.
With runners at first and second, Ambur Orozco singled to center field, and a defensive miscue allowed one run to score as the ball was midhandled in the outfield.
The next batter, Allison Lenzora, hit a ball in the infield, but the short stop mistreated it instead of throwing home, allowing the second run of the inning to come across.
Mariah Peterson then laced a single up the middle to clear the bases, increasing the margin to 4-0. After a walk, Alyssa Razo replaced Ashley Ercolano in the circle, and the squad got its second out of the inning on a grounder.
However, Victoria Saucedo singled to centerfield for a two-out rally, plating both baserunners as the lead grew to 6-0.
UC Riverside responded to Utah State's six runs with four of its own in the bottom of the second. The Aggies allowed two walks and a single to load the bases, and Stephanie Tickemyer made them pay blasting a homer for her first-ever grand slam.
That score stayed the same until the bottom of the fifth, as UCR scored a pair with two outs. Kaylie Atkinson singled to right center, and Ercolano homered to left field tying the game, 6-6.
The Highlanders used another two-out rally in the sixth to take the lead, 8-6. Natalie Sanchez singled to left field, driving in Kris DeAnda and Tickemyer, who reached base on a walk and single respectively.
The Aggies threatened in the top of the seventh putting the tying run at the plate, but Razo never allowed the base runner past first as the Highlanders sealed the 8-6 come-from-behind win.
UCR now concludes the Highlander Classic with a 2:45 pm PT game against San Diego on Sunday.
