Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team returns to The Plex this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series against Cal State Northridge. First pitches Friday and Saturday are at for 6 pm PT, while Sunday's game begins at 1 pm.

The Highlanders went 1-2 to open conference play last week, dropping the first two games of their series at UC Irvine by scores of 8-0 (box score/recap) and 4-2 (box score/recap) before bounding back to take Sunday's game, 3-1 (box score/recap).

UC Riverside's weekend rotation remains unchanged as Jake Smigelski (3-3, 2.59) throws Friday, followed by Zach Varela (3-1, 2.98) on Saturday and Ben Doucette (2-2, 3.45) on Sunday.

The Matadors also began Big West competition by winning one of three games, falling to Long Beach State on Friday (10-5) and Saturday (4-3) before winning Sunday by a 6-5 score. They are 12-16 overall.

CSUN is hitting just .247/.331/.27 as a team, and each of those figures is among the three lowest in the conference. Nick Blaser is one of a handful of bright spots in the lineup as he leads the team with a .380 batting average, a .419 on base percentage and a .443 slugging percentage.

The Matadors pitching and defense have kept them in ball games this year with an ERA of 3.47 and just 23 errors. Northridge will throw right-hander Brycen Rutherford (2-2, 1.67) on Friday, lefty Jerry Keel (0-5, 4.10) on Saturday and righty Jordan Johnson (2-2, 4.38) on Sunday.

The Highlanders are 80-82-1 all-time against the Matadors, having dropped six of the last seven meeting between the clubs (view all-time results).
