San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team heads back out on the road this week beginning with a Tuesday evening meeting with the San Diego Toreros. First pitch at Fowler Park is slated for 6 pm PT.
The Highlanders are coming off of a three-game sweep of UC Davis which vaulted them into sole possession of third place in the Big West Conference.
Freshman righty Angel Landazuri (2-1, 3.73) will make the first start of his collegiate career. The San Bernardino, California native leads UCR's relief corps with 31.1 innings pitched and 21 strikeouts. Six of his 12 relief appearances have been of 3.0 innings or more.
San Diego (26-14) started to enter some of the weekly polls last week, but a three-game sweep at home by Santa Clara dropped them out of the top 30. The Toreros lost four straight overall, and five of their last six prior to a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over Long Beach State Monday evening. Three of those losses were by one run, and another was an 11-inning defeat.
San Diego's offense has an other-worldly slash line of .326/.408/.463. Jesse Jenner paces the squad with a .393 batting average, but four other Toreros regulars are hitting better than .359. Seven starters have on base percentages north of .388 led by Joe Connor's .458. Connor also paces the squad with a slugging percentage of .596.
CJ Burdick gets the start tonight for San Diego. He brings a 2-2 record and a 2.86 ERA into the game. It will be the fourth start of the season for the right-hander who has logged 28.1 innings in 15 appearances, striking out 23 while walking 15.
The Highlanders are 41-40-1 all-time against the Toreros (view all-time results). San Diego has won four of the last five meetings between the clubs, however, including a 13-8 victory at The Plex on March 25 of this year (box score/recap/video recap).
