Baseball Heads To San Diego State For Tuesday Night Meeting With Aztecs

San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team is on the road for the next five games beginning with a Tuesday evening tilt at San Diego State. First pitch at Tony Gwynn Stadium is 6 pm PT.
The Highlanders (14-13) took two of three over the weekend against Cal State Northridge thanks to a pair of stellar pitching performances by Jake Smigelski and Zach Varela. Smigelski scattered nine hits and walked one batter over eight innings in a 4-2 victory on Friday (box score/recap), while Varela allowed just seven hits and a walk while striking out a season-high five batters in a 6-2 win Saturday (box score/recap).
Nick Vilter and Joe Chavez regained their hitting strokes, as Vilter hit .500 with a .667 on base percentage, and Chavez hit .444 with a .643 OBP and a 1.111 slugging percentage.
Antonio Gonzales (0-1 6.00) gets the start for the Highlanders tonight. His last start came on March 25 against San Diego where he went three innings allowing no hits, three walks and no runs in a game UC Riverside eventually lost to the Toreros, 13-8.
San Diego State took three games from Air Force over the weekend to improve to 24-8 on the year. The Aztecs are hitting .301 as a team and are led by Ty France, who boasts a slash line of .393/.475/.615. SDSU's team ERA is 3.34, and the Aztecs will send TJ Kendzora (3-1. 2.84) to the mound Tuesday night.
UC Riverside and San Diego State met on February 25 of this year at The Plex, as the Highlanders built a 7-1 lead through six innings only to watch as the Aztecs scored seven runs over the final three frames to escape with the 8-7 win (box score/recap). UC Riverside is 21-37-1 all-time against San Diego State, and has dropped two in a row against the Aztecs (view all-time results).
