Riverside—The 2014 UC Riverside Baseball Season comes to an end this weekend as the Highlanders head to Hawai'i for a three-game Big West series with the Rainbow Warriors.
Although the Highlanders (25-26, 11-10) are probably out of the running for an NCAA Tournament berth, they still have their sights set on a winning season and an upper division finish in conference.
Devyn Bolasky helped UC Riverside creep one step closer to that winning campaign with his Tuesday heroics in the bottom of the ninth against Grand Canyon. The Highlanders bullpen gave up a two-run lead in the top of the ninth on a three-run home run, but Bolasky countered with a three-run blast of his own (listen to the call) in UCR's half of the frame to send the Highlanders home happy (box score/recap).
UC Riverside's senior pitching triumvirate of Jake Smigelski (8-5, 3.18), Zach Varela (5-5, 3.35) and Ben Doucette (3-5, 5.31) will make its final collective starts this weekend. They will square off against a pair of right-handers in Matt Cooper (5-5, 1.64) and Scott Kuzminsky (4-7, 2.88) on Thursday and Friday, and an as yet to be determined starter on Saturday.
Hawai'i (20-30, 4-17) has struggled in its second season in the Big West, particularly at home, where they are 0-9 in conference. However those three series sweeps came at the hands of the top three teams in the conference—UC Irvine, Cal Poly and Long Beach State.
The Rainbow Warriors hit just .245/.319/.302 as a team, but they also play in the most pitcher-friendly park in the Big West, reducing offense by 33 percent compared to the average NCAA baseball stadium.
UC Riverside is 3-1 all-time against Hawai'i including taking two of three at The Plex from the Rainbow Warriors in 2013 (view all-time results).
