8/29/2014 2:01:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team opened the 2014 season Friday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Western Kentucky by the scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-12 in the first match of the UNLV Invitational. Box Score
Tyler Dorsey led the Highlanders (0-1) with eight kills while Fabiana Rosas added seven. Alyssa Cavanaugh had 12 kills to lead all players for the Hilltoppers (1-0).
UCR was down four, 9-5, following an Alex Gresham kill in the first set before WKU scored seven of the next nine points to open up a 10-point lead, 17-7. The Highlanders got the next three back, though, on a Rosas kill and a pair of Hilltoppers errors to cut the margin down to seven.
The teams traded points over the next few rallies, but the lead never dipped below seven the rest of the way as Western Kentucky went on for the 25-16 victory.
The beginning of set two saw four tie scores through 4-4 until WKU used a 5-1 run to go up 9-5. The lead was further pushed out to eight, 18-10, before the Highlanders rallied outscoring Western Kentucky 9-4 to close to just three, 22-19. Dorsey and Cristina Maietta both had two kills during that run to lead the charge.
The sides traded points late in the set as the lead was again three, 23-20, but consecutive scores for WKU put them on top, 25-20, for the win.
In the third set, the Highlanders led 2-1 following a Megan Reza kill and Hilltopper error, but a 4-0 run by Western Kentucky made the score 5-2. UCR got as close as two a few points later, 7-5, but that was as close as the set would get as a late WKU rally made the final score, 25-12. Â
UC Riverside continues play at the UNLV Invitational on Saturday, August 30 with an 11 am PT match against the host Rebels in Las Vegas, NV.
